Drawing A | Gesture Drawings & Value Studies

Before our first project, students learned how to create gesture drawings. These are quick sketches that can be used for basic outlining. They help to map in correct sizes, locations, and proportions by comparing parts of the object to surrounding areas. We spent around 3-5 minutes per sketch and had various objects on tables throughout the room. Some of these objects included leaves, fake flowers, plastic fruit, kitchen utensils, and other art supplies.

Students practiced creating value through traditional shading as well as different methods using line. In the example below, students were asked to add more lines and draw them closer together as they moved on each of the next boxes. The idea is that the first one appears lightest and the last one looks darker.
