Animals in Art: Franz Marc Oil Pastel Drawing

Our next project is an oil pastel drawing inspired by the work of Franz Marc. We looked at images of this artist's work and the characteristics each had. Students will be drawing very simplified versions of the animal they choose and will develop an abstract background to surround it. Today they practiced different methods that they may choose to use when working with oil pastels. We began by working on creating a gradient that blends similar colors together. In the next rectangle, they were asked to create circles using 2 similar colors and separate it from the background by choosing a completely different color to surround it. The third step was to create stripes using at least 3 colors in a repeating pattern. The final rectangle could be anything they wanted but needed to include at least 2 colors.  Below are examples of the oil pastel practice.
